At the beginning of the year I simply stated whom the author
and audience was, and what the author’s purpose was without trying to blend
SOAPS in order to create a more cohesive piece. Also, I was unable to find
sufficient evidence that supported both the author’s purpose and showed their
use of rhetorical devices. Throughout the year I became more skilled in
selecting key rhetorical devices that truly affect the author’s writing. I
began using introductions and conclusions within my TOWs in order to introduce
the topic and purpose of the piece in a more formal way. I believe I have
mastered identifying the purpose of essays and visual images. I still aim to
improve my intros and conclusions, because I believe if you have a strong
beginning your writing will become much more organized and therefore it will
become much easier to share your ideas in depth, and I believe if you have a strong
ending your entire piece can come together. Furthermore, I will always keep
improving my analysis skills of specific quotes from different writings. I benefitted
from doing TOWs throughout the year, because it kept my analytical skills
sharp, which helped me when writing the analysis essay on the AP exam. In addition,
they helped broaden my vocabulary by exposing me to a wide range of writing
styles/authors, and this furthered my reading comprehension skills as well.
